How to Use the Roofing Calculator
Enter the horizontal length and width of the roof footprint. Then enter the roof pitch using the rise and run values.
If your roof has an overhang, enter the horizontal overhang per side. Finally, enter a waste allowance to account for cutting, overlaps, and installation losses.
- Enter the roof length.
- Enter the full horizontal roof width.
- Enter the roof pitch rise.
- Enter the roof pitch run.
- Enter the optional overhang.
- Enter a waste allowance.
- Click Calculate Roof Area.
Roofing Calculator Formula
A pitched roof has a larger surface area than its horizontal footprint. The roof pitch is used to determine the sloped length.
Roof Footprint Area = Roof Length × Roof Width
Pitch Factor = √(1 + (Rise ÷ Run)²)
Sloped Roof Area = Adjusted Footprint Area × Pitch Factor
Roofing Area With Waste = Sloped Roof Area × (1 + Waste % ÷ 100)
The calculation provides an estimate of the roofing surface area. Actual material requirements depend on the roofing product, installation pattern, overlaps, valleys, hips, ridges, flashing, and other roof details.
Roofing Calculation Example
Suppose a roof has a horizontal footprint of 40 feet by 30 feet and a 6:12 pitch. The calculator uses the pitch to determine the actual sloped roof surface rather than simply using the flat footprint area.
If a 10% waste allowance is selected, the calculator adds that allowance to the calculated sloped area to provide a practical roofing material estimate.
Important Information About Roofing Estimates
Roof measurements should ideally be taken from the actual roof structure or accurate building plans. Measuring only the interior dimensions may produce an underestimate.
Roofs with hips, valleys, dormers, multiple sections, unusual shapes, or complex flashing require additional measurements beyond a simple length, width, and pitch calculation.
Different roofing materials also require different overlap and installation allowances. Always check the manufacturer's installation instructions when ordering materials.
Frequently Asked Questions
What does a roofing calculator calculate?
It estimates the actual roof surface area from the roof dimensions and pitch and then applies a waste allowance to estimate the required roofing material area.
Why does roof pitch affect the roof area?
A sloped roof has a greater surface area than its horizontal footprint. Increasing the pitch increases the amount of roofing surface.
Does the roofing calculator include waste?
Yes. You can enter a waste allowance for cutting, overlaps, damaged materials, and installation losses.
Can this calculator calculate a gable roof?
Yes. For a symmetrical gable roof, enter the full horizontal building width and the roof pitch. The pitch factor is then applied to the horizontal roof footprint.
