What Is an Age Calculator?
An age calculator determines the amount of calendar time between a date of birth and a selected calculation date. Instead of showing only the difference between two years, it can express the elapsed time as completed years, months and remaining days.
This distinction matters because a birthday does not occur on January 1 for everyone. Two people born in the same year can have different completed ages on the same day if one has already celebrated their birthday and the other has not.
An age calculator can help with birthday planning, personal date comparisons and learning calendar arithmetic. For official eligibility, legal deadlines or regulated applications, always check the relevant authority's age-calculation rules.
How to Use This Age Calculator
- Enter your birth date. Choose the correct day, month and year in the date field.
- Check your entry. Confirm that you selected the intended date rather than the current date or another nearby date.
- Calculate your age. Select the Calculate My Age button to display the result.
- Read the age breakdown. Review completed years, months and remaining days.
- Explore additional details. Where available, check your next birthday, birth weekday and elapsed time.
- Calculate another date. Use Clear before entering another birthday if you want to start a fresh calculation.
How Is Exact Age Calculated?
The basic starting point is to subtract the birth year from the calculation year. However, the result must be adjusted if the birthday has not occurred yet in the calculation year. The remaining months and days are then determined using the calendar.
Step 1: Find the completed years
Subtract the birth year from the calculation year. If the month and day of the birthday are still ahead of the calculation date, subtract one year.
Step 2: Find the remaining months
After finding the completed years, determine how many complete calendar months have elapsed. If the calculation day falls before the birth day number, the current month may not yet be complete.
Step 3: Find the remaining days
Determine the days remaining after accounting for the completed years and months. This step requires the correct length of the relevant calendar month. Months do not all contain 30 days, so a fixed 30-day assumption can produce an incorrect result.
Worked Age Calculation Examples
Example 1: The birthday has already occurred
Date of birth: March 15, 2000
Calculation date: October 9, 2026
- Subtract the years: 2026 − 2000 = 26.
- March 15 has already passed by October 9, so the person has completed 26 years.
- From March 15 to October 9 is 6 complete months and 24 days.
Result: 26 years, 6 months and 24 days.
Example 2: The birthday is still ahead
Date of birth: December 20, 2000
Calculation date: October 9, 2026
- Subtract the years: 2026 − 2000 = 26.
- December 20 has not arrived yet, so the person has completed only 25 years.
- From December 20, 2025, to October 9, 2026, is 9 complete months and 19 days.
Result: 25 years, 9 months and 19 days.
Example 3: Age on a past date
Date of birth: June 10, 1995
Calculation date: June 10, 2020
The dates have the same month and day, and the years differ by 25. The age on the selected past date was 25 years, 0 months and 0 days.
Example 4: Age on a future date
Date of birth: January 1, 2000
Calculation date: January 1, 2030
The selected date is exactly 30 calendar years after the birth date. The projected age is 30 years, 0 months and 0 days.
