What Is GPA?
GPA stands for Grade Point Average. It is a numerical measure commonly used by schools, colleges, and universities to summarize a student's academic performance.
On a 4.0 scale, higher grade points generally represent stronger academic performance. Each course contributes to the GPA according to both its grade and the number of credits assigned to the course.
How Is GPA Calculated?
A weighted GPA is calculated by multiplying each course's grade points by its credit hours, adding those results together, and dividing by the total number of credits.
GPA = Total Grade Points ÷ Total Credits
This means a course with more credits has a greater effect on the final GPA than a course with fewer credits.
Standard 4.0 GPA Scale
| Letter Grade | Grade Points |
|---|---|
| A+ | 4.0 |
| A | 4.0 |
| A- | 3.7 |
| B+ | 3.3 |
| B | 3.0 |
| B- | 2.7 |
| C+ | 2.3 |
| C | 2.0 |
| C- | 1.7 |
| D | 1.0 |
| F | 0.0 |
This calculator uses the grade-point values shown above. Your school or university may use a different grading scale.
GPA Calculation Example
Suppose a student has three courses:
| Course | Grade | Grade Points | Credits |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mathematics | A | 4.0 | 3 |
| English | B | 3.0 | 3 |
| Science | A- | 3.7 | 4 |
Total grade points: (4.0 × 3) + (3.0 × 3) + (3.7 × 4) = 33.8
Total credits: 3 + 3 + 4 = 10
GPA: 33.8 ÷ 10 = 3.38
Why Do Credits Matter?
GPA is normally credit-weighted. This means courses with different credit values do not necessarily contribute equally to your final GPA.
For example, a 4-credit course has a greater effect on your GPA than a 2-credit course with the same grade because the 4-credit course contributes twice as many grade points.
Important Note About GPA Scales
GPA systems vary between schools, colleges, and countries. Some institutions use a 4.0 scale, while others may use different scales or grading policies.
This calculator uses the standard grade-point values displayed above. For official academic records, always use the grading policy provided by your institution.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is a 4.0 GPA scale?
A 4.0 GPA scale assigns numerical grade points to letter grades, with 4.0 generally representing the highest grade point used in this calculator.
Does a higher-credit course affect GPA more?
Yes. In a credit-weighted GPA calculation, a course with more credits has a greater effect on the final GPA.
Can I add more than three courses?
Yes. Use the Add Course button to add additional courses to the calculator.
Can I remove a course?
Yes. Each course row has a Remove button.
Is this GPA calculator official?
No. It is an estimation tool. Your institution's official GPA calculation may use different grade values, rounding rules, or policies.
