What Is Fuel Cost?

Fuel cost is the estimated amount spent on gasoline, petrol, diesel, or another vehicle fuel during a trip. The total depends mainly on the distance traveled, the vehicle's fuel economy, and the local fuel price.

Calculating fuel costs before a journey can help with travel budgeting, vehicle comparisons, commuting expenses, and road-trip planning.

Fuel prices are entered in the currency and price unit applicable to your location. This calculator does not perform currency exchange or predict future fuel prices.

Fuel Cost Formula

When fuel economy is expressed in kilometers per liter, estimated fuel consumption is:

Fuel Used = Distance ÷ Fuel Economy

Fuel Cost = Fuel Used × Fuel Price

When fuel economy is expressed as L/100 km, fuel consumption is calculated by multiplying the distance by the liters consumed per 100 kilometers and dividing by 100.

When fuel economy is expressed in MPG, the calculator converts the distance and fuel economy to compatible units before calculating the required fuel.

Fuel Cost Examples

Distance Fuel Economy Fuel Price Estimated Cost
100 km 15 km/L ₹100/L ₹666.67
500 km 15 km/L $1.50/L $50.00
300 mi 30 MPG $3.50/gal $35.00

Tips for Estimating Fuel Costs

Use your vehicle's actual fuel economy when possible. Real-world mileage can differ from manufacturer estimates because of traffic, driving style, speed, weather, road conditions, vehicle load, and tire pressure.

For a round trip, enter the total distance for both directions rather than entering only the distance to your destination.

If fuel prices vary substantially along your route, use a reasonable average fuel price to produce a more useful estimate.

Fuel Cost Calculator FAQ

How do I calculate fuel cost for a trip?

Estimate the amount of fuel your vehicle will use and multiply that amount by the fuel price. The calculator performs these steps automatically after you enter your distance, fuel economy, and fuel price.

Can I use kilometers and km/L?

Yes. Select kilometers and km/L for the metric fuel-economy system commonly used in many countries.

Can I use L/100 km?

Yes. L/100 km expresses how many liters of fuel a vehicle consumes to travel 100 kilometers. A lower L/100 km value represents better fuel efficiency.

Can I use miles and MPG?

Yes. Select miles and MPG to calculate fuel consumption using miles per US gallon.

Can I enter fuel price per gallon?

Yes. Select Price per US Gallon when your local fuel price is quoted in gallons.

Does the calculator support currencies other than dollars?

Yes. You can select several common currencies including USD, INR, GBP, EUR, CAD, AUD, JPY, CNY, AED, SGD, and CHF. A custom currency symbol can also be entered.

Does this calculator convert currencies?

No. Currency selection only determines how your fuel price and estimated cost are displayed. Enter the fuel price in the currency used where you are purchasing fuel.

Will the actual fuel cost be exactly the same?

Not necessarily. Actual fuel consumption can vary because of traffic, speed, weather, road conditions, vehicle load, maintenance, tire pressure, and driving habits.

Does the calculator include tolls or parking?

No. The result represents estimated fuel cost only. Tolls, parking, accommodation, food, and other travel expenses are not included.
