Flooring Calculator
Estimate how much flooring material you need to cover a room or other rectangular floor area.
Enter the floor dimensions, material coverage, and waste allowance to calculate the required flooring area and estimated number of boxes.
Calculate Flooring Needed
Enter the floor dimensions in feet and the material coverage in square feet.

How Does the Flooring Calculator Work?
The calculator begins by determining the floor area from the length and width of the room.
It then increases the required area by the waste allowance you enter. The resulting area is divided by the coverage provided by one box of flooring.
Floor Area = Length × Width
Required Area = Floor Area × (1 + Waste %)
Boxes Needed = Required Area ÷ Coverage per Box
How to Calculate Floor Area
For a rectangular room, multiply the floor's length by its width. If both measurements are in feet, the result is expressed in square feet.
Floor Area = Length × Width
For example, a room that is 20 feet long and 15 feet wide has:
20 × 15 = 300 sq ft
Why Add a Flooring Waste Allowance?
Flooring materials normally require cutting around walls, corners, doorways, fixtures, and other obstacles. Some material can also be damaged during installation.
Adding a waste allowance helps provide enough material to complete the installation without relying on an exact theoretical quantity.
| Waste Allowance | General Planning Situation |
|---|---|
| 5% | Simple room with relatively few cuts |
| 10% | Common starting estimate for many installations |
| 15% | More cutting or a more complicated layout |
| 20%+ | Complex patterns or substantial cutting |
These are general planning ranges. Follow the flooring manufacturer's recommendations when available.
Flooring Calculator Example
Suppose a rectangular room is 20 feet long and 15 feet wide.
The floor area is:
20 × 15 = 300 sq ft
If the flooring has a 10% waste allowance:
300 × 1.10 = 330 sq ft
If each box covers 20 square feet:
330 ÷ 20 = 16.5 boxes
Since flooring is normally purchased in complete boxes, you would need approximately 17 boxes.
Types of Flooring You Can Estimate
The area calculation can be used when planning many types of flooring, including laminate, vinyl plank, engineered wood, hardwood, carpet, and other materials sold according to surface coverage.
The important value for the calculator is the coverage stated by the manufacturer or supplier.
How to Calculate Flooring for an Irregular Room
If a room is not a simple rectangle, divide the floor into smaller rectangular or other measurable sections.
Calculate the area of each section separately and add the areas together before applying the waste allowance.
Total Floor Area = Area 1 + Area 2 + Area 3 + ...
How to Use the Flooring Calculator
- Measure the floor length in feet.
- Measure the floor width in feet.
- Enter the coverage provided by one box of flooring.
- Enter a waste allowance appropriate for the project.
- Click Calculate Flooring.
- Review the floor area, required area, waste quantity, and estimated number of boxes.
Flooring Measurement Tips
- Measure the room in more than one location when walls may not be perfectly straight.
- Divide large or irregular spaces into manageable sections.
- Measure closets or connected areas separately if they will receive the same flooring.
- Check the manufacturer's package for the exact coverage per box.
- Keep spare material when practical for future repairs or replacements.
Important Note About Flooring Estimates
This calculator provides a planning estimate based on the measurements and coverage information you provide. Actual material requirements can vary because of room shape, installation direction, cuts, patterns, damaged material, and manufacturer specifications.
Always compare the estimate with the flooring product's packaging and installation instructions before making a final purchase.
Frequently Asked Questions
How much flooring do I need?
Calculate the floor area, add an appropriate waste allowance, and compare the resulting area with the coverage of the flooring product.
How much flooring waste should I allow?
A 10% allowance is a common starting point for many straightforward installations, but the appropriate amount depends on the room and installation pattern.
Does the calculator calculate boxes?
Yes. Enter the square-foot coverage of one box and the calculator estimates the number of complete boxes required.
Can I use this calculator for laminate flooring?
Yes. It can be used for laminate and other flooring products when you know the surface area and coverage per box.
Can I calculate flooring for an irregular room?
Yes. Divide the room into measurable sections, calculate each section's area, add them together, and use the total area with the calculator.
Is the flooring estimate exact?
No. It is an estimate. Actual requirements depend on the room layout, cutting, installation pattern, product specifications, and other factors.
