What Is a Discount?
A discount reduces the original price of a product or service by a specified percentage or fixed amount. Percentage discounts are commonly used during sales, promotions, coupons, and special offers.
For example, if an item costs $100 and has a 20% discount, the discount amount is $20 and the final price is $80.
How to Use the Discount Calculator
- Enter the original price of the item.
- Enter the discount percentage.
- Optionally enter an additional discount if the purchase has two successive percentage discounts.
- Click Calculate Discount.
The calculator shows the discount amount, final price, and total savings. If an additional discount is entered, it is applied to the price remaining after the first discount.
Discount Formula
To calculate the amount saved from a percentage discount, use:
To calculate the final price:
For example, a $250 item with a 15% discount has a discount amount of $37.50 and a final price of $212.50.
How Successive Discounts Work
Two percentage discounts applied one after another are not simply added together.
For example, suppose a $100 item receives a 20% discount followed by a 10% discount.
After 20% discount: $80
After 10% discount: $72
The combined reduction is $28, or 28% of the original price, not 30%. The second discount is calculated from the already reduced price.
Discount Examples
If a product costs $80 and is discounted by 25%:
Final Price = $80 − $20 = $60
You save $20 and pay $60 after the discount.
Tips for Comparing Discounts
A larger percentage discount does not always mean a better deal. Compare the final price as well as the amount saved.
When comparing promotions, check whether a discount is applied before or after another discount, coupon, shipping charge, or other fee.
For percentage-off promotions, calculate the final price rather than assuming that multiple discounts can simply be added together.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I calculate a discount?
Multiply the original price by the discount percentage divided by 100. Subtract the resulting discount amount from the original price to find the final price.
What is the final price after a discount?
The final price is the original price minus the discount amount.
How much is 20% off $100?
A 20% discount on $100 saves $20, leaving a final price of $80.
Are two 10% discounts equal to 20% off?
No. When two 10% discounts are applied successively, the second discount is calculated from the reduced price. The combined reduction is 19%.
Can I calculate two successive discounts?
Yes. Enter the second percentage discount in the optional Additional Discount field. The calculator applies it after the first discount.
